It really depends on your area and the type of situation you're going for. If you're cool with potentially burning a bridge and finding another doctor, just walk in and say you were diagnosed with ADHD before
and then you went off meds because you didn't need them, but you've been struggling lately and would like to start up again.
If you're more limited in the amount of doctors you can potentially see, it's very important that you don't throw up any drug seeking signs. Personally, here's what I did.
Went to my GP, hey I'm starting college, but in high school I had some concentration issues. I'm concerned it may affect my college life as well, is this something we can look into? He then referred me to the
state's Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. OVR is a state agency and every state has it, but how much they can do will vary by state. I live in Pennsylvania, and they will pay for testing. So I met with my
OVR case worker, she referred me to a psychologist, tested, and I am diagnosed with ADHD. Now, I didn't lie, but if you wanted to you very easily could. It's not hard, just be smart about it.
I was also diagnosed with depression and anxiety, so I was referred to a therapist. And the clinic I go to for therapy does meds as well. I waited 2 months, and then said "Y'know I was tested positive for
ADHD, I wanted to get started with an antidepressant and everything first, but now that I'm stabilizing a bit I'm still having issues with concentrating." The doctor checked my psych eval, and prescribed me
Adderall.
Now, I also have psychotic symptoms, so he started my dosage very low (5mg XR once a day) but then we increased it every month. Right now I have it at 20mg XR with a 10mg IR booster. I had to switch doctors
and my current one is an asshole about increasing any dosages, even for non-abusable meds, but I definitely could have had this up higher by now even if I really wanted to, but I am actually alright at this
dose. May push for 30mg XR soon.
Whole process probably took a year to get diagnosed and my dosage up to a decent level. But my doctor does not suspect me as drug seeking whatsoever and I know my file looks good, so when I transfer files and
get a new psychiatrist in the future, it will reflect positively on me. And I mean I probably could have done it significantly faster. I could have asked for Adderall immediately without it really being
suspicious, if I hadn't mentioned psychotic symptoms I could've gotten my dose up faster, etc, etc.
It's a hassle, but it's worth it if you want to maintain a clean record with doctors and have a verifiable trail. If your insurance is good enough and you live in an area with enough options for doctors, you
can definitely just be pretty blunt about it and just bail if the doctor gets shitty.
I guess basically the best way to go about it without arousing suspicion, never directly ask for Adderall, or any stimulant. Just talk about symptoms.
